DEHYDRATION TREATMENT

Dehydration Treatment

Signs & Causes

Dehydration is a relatively common condition and can be easily remedied at the first sign of an issue. Essentially, losing more water than you consume can cause excessive thirst, darkened urine, and a number of other symptoms including:
  • Dry mouth
  • Muscle weakness
  • Feeling tired
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Feeling dizzy
  • Crying without tears
  • No urine output (for more than 4-6 hours) or excessive urination
If your child is already sick, it can be very easy for dehydration to occur. Diarrhea, vomiting, and sweating too frequently without replenishing or being able to keep down liquids can lead to dehydration.

How We Can Help

There are a number of ways that our physicians can help, and there are also a few things that you can do at home to help your child get the fluids that they need. Of course, you should always encourage your child to drink water; even small sips every now and then can help to keep fluid levels up. If they have been suffering from a stomach bug, it’s likely that their electrolytes are also on the lower side. In these cases, sipping on diluted juice or a salty soup can help to bump up both water and electrolyte levels.

However, if the above systems persist or your child cannot keep water down, you should seek additional treatment from immediate care to confirm there isn't something more serious going on as well as treat your child's dehydration before it worsens. At Pediatric Urgent Car of Rochester, we offer after-hour care until 10:00 PM every night. If you believe your child is dehydrated and needs treatment, bring them in today.
